Elliott Smith – Georgia, Georgia
Posted on Oct 25th, 2007 by Alan @ 1:15 pm

I can’t help but associate this song with the fortunes of the Scotland football team over the last month… and it’s not just the title. The lyrics seem to be written not by Elliott Smith but by a disheartened Scotland fan, and suggest that the only silver lining in our pished cloud is that there is no doubt about the result we need in a few weeks time against Italy at Hampden!

“When you walked out on the savannah shoulder
With your veins all full of beer
Thinking well at least now everything is clear
But oh man
What a plan

But that’s not all… Elliott seemed to have a premonition about our performance in France last month, and how it would only raise our expectations to an unnaturally high level before being shattered by the piss-poor performance in Tbilisi:

“Three weeks ago you were all grace and charm
And now I know it was just a false alarm
Georgia Georgia
I can’t understand your sickness
You have no forgiveness
No attention left to pay
The quiet way you leave
And just forget it all
Just takes my breath away”

Yeah, well, how am I supposed to feel?

Elliott Smith / Madeleine Peyroux – Between The Bars
Posted on Aug 3rd, 2007 by Alan @ 9:21 am

Oliver Arms - Between The Bars

I couldn’t decide whose picture to include on this post – on one hand I find Madeleine Peyroux more, ahem, photogenic, but Elliott Smith is one of my favourite ever singer / songwriters. So in the end I did a google image search for “Between The Bars” and found this picture by Oliver Arms that I thought would be perfect. The Western Project gallery is in California, not all that handy for me, but their website has a lot on it. Pay them a visit.

So here are two versions of Elliott’s song, which you might recognise from the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting if you’re not too familiar with his music. I love the slightly breathless quality of his voice, I reckon he could have given any song – even The Birdie Song! – an emotional edge.

The second version is from a CD that my sister-in-law had on in the background while we were visiting one evening. My other half loved it and it was only after she’d played it half a dozen times that I realised why it sounded so familiar. The two versions aren’t all that different really, but some mental barrier prevented me associating Elliott Smith with “chick jazz”.

Elliott Smith – Son of Sam
Posted on Mar 27th, 2007 by Alan @ 9:40 am

Elliott Smith

Another cheery song today – a homage to David Berkowitz, better known by the name he gave himself in his letters to newspapers and to the police: “Son of Sam”. Berkowitz confessed to a series of murders and attempted murders in New York in the late 1970s, although in the last few years the case has been reopened on suspicion that others were involved.

I recently read rumours that some more of the music he wrote immediately before his death was being prepared for release. For now, if you don’t own any of his back catalogue already I’d suggest “Figure 8” is as good a place as any to start.

More serial killer related fun soon!

This blog is intended as a way to spread the word about music I really like, and encourage others to support artists who are making great music. "Try before you buy", if you like. If you hear something you like here, go and buy it - I'll post links to online shops where you can buy each track I blog about.

If you're reading this and you are the artist, or their record company, and you don't want a track I've posted to be available to hear in this way just email me and let me know - I will be more than happy to take the file down straight away. I've heard of other bloggers getting threatened with letters from lawyers, and there is absolutely no need to waste your money on that with me!
