DJ Earworm – No One Takes Your Freedom
Posted on Oct 5th, 2010 by Alan @ 11:27 am

I found this track on a compilation called “Have You Seen My Guitar?”, a compilation of 20 mashups based on rock/indie tracks. This one’s a classic, at first it’s the vocals of one track over the instrumental of another, then they flip, then a couple of new tracks are chucked in the mix – each one merging seamlessly into possibly the best mashup I’ve found so far.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

You can hear more of DJ Earworm’s stuff here, and download the compilation at Simon Iddol’s website. You will not be disappointed with what you find at either of those sites!

Yes Is Bad

February’s mix tape will be along soon, but I just HAD to post this straight away. Sheer genius from the master of mashups, DJ Moule.

Gnarls Supertramp – Crazy Logic
Posted on Jul 18th, 2008 by Alan @ 3:53 pm

Back to mashups today, and this wee gem for your enjoyment. It was done by a fella called Arty Fufkin, who used to have a website with his various mashups on it but doesn’t seem to any more. Shame, as he’s a master of his craft. This one is probably not the best example of his expertise, the two main tracks (Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and The Logical Song by Supertramp) fit together so well that it was probably pretty straightforward to make – or is this in the “deceptively difficult” category of genius??? Either way it’s the only mashup of the two tracks I’ve heard and I can’t imagine it being bettered, so credit where it’s due.

Just Can’t Get You Off My Mind

This one is just for The Wallace – the only fan of gay 80s pop that I know. This track breaks the mould though, it’s an absolute belter.

Thanks to beatmixed.com (DJ Matt Hite) for the track – also check out the “Nine Inch Noels” post from 21st December!!!

Best Mashups of 2007
Posted on Feb 5th, 2008 by Alan @ 3:17 pm

With thanks to the excellent mashup sites mashuptown.com and bootieusa.com, who both released “Best of 2007” mixtapes, I have immense pleasure in sharing with you my five favourite mashups of last year. I compel you to go and download the whole shootin’ matches because I could have easily have picked a top 20 just from those two sources.

Party Ben – Every Car You Chase (The Police vs Snow Patrol)
I thought the vocals were by Semisonic the first time I heard this, but it turns out it’s Snow Patrol. I’ll have to check them out because I like the sound of this – I’d mentally filed them as unimaginative indie rock, but I guess that was pretty harsh, I’m probably confusing them with someone else. Use the comments field to suggest your choice of unimaginative indie rock that I should avoid.

DJ Topcat – More Than On Point (House of Pain vs Boston)
This reminds me of Run DMC vs Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”, with that chunky guitar riff running through it perfectly matched to the rap vocals.

Divide & Kreate – Illiterate City (Jackson 5 vs Guns ‘n’ Roses)
This is, in equal parts, both brilliant and hilarious. Wee Jacko going totally nutso over the guitar solo is my favourite point in the track.

A plus D – Standing In The Way Of Connection (The Gossip vs Elastica)
Two very different vocal styles here – Justine Frischmann of Elastica’s laid back approach was perfect for the shoegazing 90s, whereas Beth Ditto of The Gossip could never be described as laid back. Apart from when she’s asleep I guess. I’d happily listen to the original version of either of these tracks, but mashed together they’re even better.

The Illuminoids – Pretend We’re Alala (L7 vs CSS)
I can’t recall anything by L7 other than “Pretend We’re Dead”, and if their bass player hadn’t got her minge out on The Word that time I probably wouldn’t have paid them much attention in the first place. I could probably do a Google Images search or look on YouTube to check this out, but I’m too lazy so I’ll just shoot from the hip: I reckon that was a merkin.
That said, it was a quality song, and so is this mashup.

The Cure vs Missy Elliot – One Minute Cat
Posted on Aug 27th, 2007 by Alan @ 12:07 pm

Robert Smith?

Another mashup – this time The Cure’s “Love Cats” is thrown in a moulinex blender with “One Minute Man” by Missy Elliot. Soooooperb!

Eminem vs Genesis – Without Me vs Land Of Confusion
Posted on Aug 15th, 2007 by Alan @ 6:17 pm

Spitting Genesis

I’m not a massive fan of Genesis, and as you progress through their back catalogue I like them even less, but there’s something about the “Invisible Touch” album that still appeals to me. I wish I could quote Patrick Bateman’s monologues on Genesis in “American Psycho” in full, but all I can remember about his reference to “Land Of Confusion” is “in this song, Phil Collins addresses the problem of abusive political authority…” as he ties up a prostitute!

However, Genesis are pretty naff on the whole, and I’d think long and hard before posting anything purely by them on here. But mashups are cool! Here’s what would happen if Patrick Bateman was to tie Phil Collins and Eminem together with one of his exquisite silk sheets and they were to make babies…

Another bootleg from Aggro1 – this time from another of my favourite artists, Sufjan Stevens, mashed up with Christina Aguilera.

Lovely!

Porcupine Tree vs MIA – .3
Posted on May 2nd, 2007 by Alan @ 6:42 am

Welcome to one of my favourite things – the mashup. To quote Barry Cryer on “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” it’s one old song to the tune of another (as opposed to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical, which is another old song to the tune of several million).

Sorry about not posting for a few days – I was away at The Wallaces’ (as opposed to The Wallace’s!) wedding at the weekend and I’m just catching up now. At that wedding, in fact, the DJ played the non Porcupine Tree portion of this song at one point… a real floor emptier!!! It’s “Galang” by M.I.A. – and I’m not ashamed to say I’m way too uncool to have ever heard of them in my puff. This creation was put together by someone called Aggro1, and is a real beauty.

I’ll let the music do the talking. I’ve got a bunch more mashups on the Mac at home so I’ll post some more of them over the next few days.

This blog is intended as a way to spread the word about music I really like, and encourage others to support artists who are making great music. "Try before you buy", if you like. If you hear something you like here, go and buy it - I'll post links to online shops where you can buy each track I blog about.

If you're reading this and you are the artist, or their record company, and you don't want a track I've posted to be available to hear in this way just email me and let me know - I will be more than happy to take the file down straight away. I've heard of other bloggers getting threatened with letters from lawyers, and there is absolutely no need to waste your money on that with me!
