February’s mix tape will be along soon, but I just HAD to post this straight away. Sheer genius from the master of mashups, DJ Moule. Back to mashups today, and this wee gem for your enjoyment. It was done by a fella called Arty Fufkin, who used to have a website with his various mashups on it but doesn’t seem to any more. Shame, as he’s a master of his craft. This one is probably not the best example of his expertise, the two main tracks (Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and The Logical Song by Supertramp) fit together so well that it was probably pretty straightforward to make – or is this in the “deceptively difficult” category of genius??? Either way it’s the only mashup of the two tracks I’ve heard and I can’t imagine it being bettered, so credit where it’s due.

I’m departing from the usual suspects as far as live music goes over the next couple of months, as the next two gigs I’m going to are of bands I’ve never seen live before. We’re going to see Portishead live in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks’ time, and then in May it’s the Willard Grant Conspiracy. Portishead should be interesting, I’ve no idea how that’ll translate to a live setting at all, way back when Dummy first came out I loved it but never even considered checking them out live. Willard Grant Conspiracy will be a great night out I think. Being a close personal friend to the stars, I was recently talking to a composer I know – when I asked him if he was working on anything interesting he said he’d co-written an album with an American band and would be going out on tour with them in the summer. I possibly tried to nod knowledgeably for a moment when he said it was WGC before quickly fessing up that I’d never heard of them! I have now, though! Get the Flash Player to see this content.

This one is just for The Wallace – the only fan of gay 80s pop that I know. This track breaks the mould though, it’s an absolute belter. Thanks to beatmixed.com (DJ Matt Hite) for the track – also check out the “Nine Inch Noels” post from 21st December!!! I’m not a massive fan of Genesis, and as you progress through their back catalogue I like them even less, but there’s something about the “Invisible Touch” album that still appeals to me. I wish I could quote Patrick Bateman’s monologues on Genesis in “American Psycho” in full, but all I can remember about his reference to “Land Of Confusion” is “in this song, Phil Collins addresses the problem of abusive political authority…” as he ties up a prostitute! However, Genesis are pretty naff on the whole, and I’d think long and hard before posting anything purely by them on here. But mashups are cool! Here’s what would happen if Patrick Bateman was to tie Phil Collins and Eminem together with one of his exquisite silk sheets and they were to make babies… Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Another bootleg from Aggro1 – this time from another of my favourite artists, Sufjan Stevens, mashed up with Christina Aguilera. Lovely! Welcome to one of my favourite things – the mashup. To quote Barry Cryer on “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” it’s one old song to the tune of another (as opposed to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest musical, which is another old song to the tune of several million). Sorry about not posting for a few days – I was away at The Wallaces’ (as opposed to The Wallace’s!) wedding at the weekend and I’m just catching up now. At that wedding, in fact, the DJ played the non Porcupine Tree portion of this song at one point… a real floor emptier!!! It’s “Galang” by M.I.A. – and I’m not ashamed to say I’m way too uncool to have ever heard of them in my puff. This creation was put together by someone called Aggro1, and is a real beauty. I’ll let the music do the talking. I’ve got a bunch more mashups on the Mac at home so I’ll post some more of them over the next few days.
