Jason Falkner – Author Unknown
Posted on Aug 29th, 2008 by Alan @ 1:35 pm

I said enough about Jason Falkner yesterday so I won’t repeat myself. Here is “Author Unknown” (the track, not the album).

Jason Falkner – Miracle Medicine
Posted on Aug 28th, 2008 by Alan @ 11:24 am

I’ve got a couple of albums by the ex-Jellyfish guitarist and they confuse the hell out of me. One of them is called “Author Unknown”, and the other is “Can You Still Feel” but has a track on it called “Author Unknown”. Slightly disappointingly, given Falkner’s background in one of the most innovating bunch of 60s throwbacks that the early 90s produced, that’s the most confusing thing about these two albums! If that sounds harsh I apologise… if I’d had a tongue-in-cheek smilie I would have used it… but the fact remains that these are two very straightforward records (of the highest quality nonetheless) that have more in common with the likes of Semisonic than Jellyfish.

This track is from “Author Unknown” (his debut solo album) which just about shades it as the better album of the two I have. It’s much more guitar-driven than Jellyfish naturally, and has some cracking tracks on it – “Don’t Show Me Heaven” and “Afraid Himself To Be” are definitely worth checking out as well. The whole album is, in fact, as is it’s successor. I’m waiting for a slightly cheaper copy of “I’m OK, You’re OK” to come available before seeing whether his good work has continued, it’s trading at the £25 mark right now which is a wee bit too high to tempt the readies out of my pocket.

Imperial Drag – Zodiac Sign
Posted on Feb 24th, 2008 by Alan @ 5:22 pm

imperialdrag.jpg

Back to my series of posts on post-Jellyfish projects…

Imperial Drag was formed by Roger Manning straight after the split, alongwith Eric Dover who had performed as second guitarist in their live line-up during the Spilt Milk era. They released only one album, also called Imperial Drag, which is a decent enough record but sadly nothing spectacular. This track is one of the highlights and makes up for some of the shortcomings of that record. Like a lot of the post-Jellyfish output from all of the band members the spark that made Jellyfish so special is missing, and it’s almost like they were trying too hard to stay in that niche.

Roger Joseph Manning Jr – Wish It Would Rain

manning-moog.jpg

The Jellyfish Solo Projects series continues with this one from the Moog Monster, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. Roger Manning.

His album “Land Of Pure Imagination” is a fantastic record, better in my mind than anything else he’s done since Jellyfish. One of those albums that is at it’s best cranked up way past safe hearing levels in the car as you “give it some shoe”.

LEO – Goodbye Innocence
Posted on Nov 9th, 2007 by Alan @ 11:49 am

alpacas-orgling.jpg

Here’s an example of Amazon’s recommendations paying off big-time… I was snooping around trying to plug the gaps in my post-Jellyfish collection, and apparently people who have bought Jason Falkner albums have also bought a CD called “Alpacas Orgling” by LEO – according to the one customer review that’s on there it is the brainchild of Andy Sturmer, and an unashamed homage to Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra. While the latter is definitely true – I don’t know anything by ELO other than “Don’t Bring Me Down” (and Frost’s version of “Here Is The News”) but a lot of it sounds like that, and it reminded me in places of Jeff Lynne’s guitar work on the Traveling Wilbury’s albums – I’m not so sure about the former.

Andy Sturmer has writing credits on only two tracks, and appears on only one – he sings the bridge about 2 and a half minutes into the following track. The creator of this mastertape is actually a guy who goes by the name of Bleu in the writing credits and by the name William James McAuley III elsewhere in the CD booklet.

No matter. This is a fine album that I’m delighted to own even if it wasn’t quite what I thought I was buying. Read more about it here.

Jason Falkner – Don’t Show Me Heaven
Posted on Oct 26th, 2007 by Alan @ 9:30 am

Jason Falkner was the guitarist on Jellyfish’s first album “Bellybutton” (an absolute classic that everybody on the planet should own) and since then moves in fairly eclectic musical circles (see his Wikipedia biog for details).

I’d been meaning to fill in the gaps in my post-Jellyfish collection for years, and finally got round to checking out Jason’s solo material this summer. And I was impressed. This track is from his first solo CD “Author Unknown”, and takes a more conventional path than Jellyfish’s music. Falkner plays pretty much everything on this album, and does a very good job of it all too.

This blog is intended as a way to spread the word about music I really like, and encourage others to support artists who are making great music. "Try before you buy", if you like. If you hear something you like here, go and buy it - I'll post links to online shops where you can buy each track I blog about.

If you're reading this and you are the artist, or their record company, and you don't want a track I've posted to be available to hear in this way just email me and let me know - I will be more than happy to take the file down straight away. I've heard of other bloggers getting threatened with letters from lawyers, and there is absolutely no need to waste your money on that with me!
