Marissa Nadler – No Surprises
Posted on Jul 28th, 2008 by Alan @ 3:00 pm

This was featured a while back on Stereogum’s collection of Radiohead covers, which was a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. Radiohead must be a pretty difficult band to cover, and credit to all of them for what was an adventurous set of interpretations.

I love the original version of this one, and didn’t expect to enjoy a cover of it half as much as this. I’d not heard of Marissa Nadler before, but checked her last.fm page out and there’s some great stuff on there. And I also found out she’s apparently part of the “New Weird America” movement! Which is nice!

Radiohead – Weird Fishes / Arpeggi

So now that the hype has died down, what’s the verdict on In Rainbows? Classic / decent / pish?

My initial enthusiasm about it has died down a bit, but I still think it’s a bloody good album and an improvement on their last few releases though. I don’t often listen to the whole album from start to finish though – but this is a track I never skip.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees

I got my download of “In Rainbows” yesterday and it seems like the world doesn’t need yet another instant review of it so I’ll keep my thoughts to myself for now. Suffice to say that after two plays through I make it the best thing they’ve done in a decade – I reckon it’s better than Hail To The Thief, Kid A and Amnesiac; as good as OK Computer and Pablo Honey; but not a patch on The Bends. But then again, hardly anything is.

So here is a reminder of just how good that album was.

If you googled to this page and were hoping to hear the new album, stop being a cheap bastard – go and order your own £0.01 copy here. The downloads are only available as 160kbps mp3 files, but that’ll keep you going until the CD you order gets delivered.

This blog is intended as a way to spread the word about music I really like, and encourage others to support artists who are making great music. "Try before you buy", if you like. If you hear something you like here, go and buy it - I'll post links to online shops where you can buy each track I blog about.

If you're reading this and you are the artist, or their record company, and you don't want a track I've posted to be available to hear in this way just email me and let me know - I will be more than happy to take the file down straight away. I've heard of other bloggers getting threatened with letters from lawyers, and there is absolutely no need to waste your money on that with me!
