Frank Black – Places Named After Numbers
Posted on Apr 7th, 2008 by Alan @ 9:40 am

I keep on returning to the Frank Black album – after neglecting it for so many years it’s been such a pleasant experience to re-discover it.

I’ve no idea what Mr Black had in mind when he wrote this one, as I only know of a couple of places that could even remotely be thought of as being “named after numbers”. There’s a town in Aberdeenshire called Fyvie, and I guess you could stretch things by saying the River Severn is almost named after a number – but that’s it! Do you know any???

Frank Black – Don’t Ya Rile ‘Em

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted a Frank Black song, last time I described the first time I heard his music, and since posting that I’ve been listening to his eponymous album a fair bit.

Here’s one of the high points of that album, a fantastic lively track that just begs me to hit the “repeat” button every time.

Frank Black – Two Spaces
Posted on Jul 30th, 2007 by Alan @ 10:04 am

Frank Black

I was reading a post on Song, By Toad about the Manic Street Preachers, and how that blogger first heard them on the listening post at a record store. That got me thinking about a similar experience I had with Frank Black’s self-titled solo album – I was a student in Aberdeen at the time and the Virgin store had not long opened there, complete with listening posts. The Pixies weren’t really on my radar other than being a band that got played a lot in the student union so I didn’t make the connection until much later, it was the album cover that caught my attention. over the years I’ve gotten interested in a lot of music purely because the cover art intrigued me (with varying degrees of success… “In The Court Of The Crimson King” by King Crimson is at the opposite end of the spectrum, it has a fantastic cover but I absolutely detest the music!) – and this is one of the things I’ll miss if downloads ever become the sole medium for music to be sold. Anyway, here’s what did it for me that day:

Not knowing what to expect I put the headphones on and hit play, and was blown away. I listened through about half of the album there and then before I got self-conscious about hogging the facility – not long enough to get to what ended up being my favourite track, Two Spaces, which I finally got to hear on the top deck of the number 20 bus going back to my flat.

I hadn’t listened to this in years until the other night, and I was very pleased to find out that this album has stood the test of time, it sounds as good to me now as it did standing in Virgin Records back in 1994. And it has successfully defeated the forces of inflation! On Amazon it’s available for about half the price I paid for it back then 😉 so you really have no excuse not to add it to your collection.

This blog is intended as a way to spread the word about music I really like, and encourage others to support artists who are making great music. "Try before you buy", if you like. If you hear something you like here, go and buy it - I'll post links to online shops where you can buy each track I blog about.

If you're reading this and you are the artist, or their record company, and you don't want a track I've posted to be available to hear in this way just email me and let me know - I will be more than happy to take the file down straight away. I've heard of other bloggers getting threatened with letters from lawyers, and there is absolutely no need to waste your money on that with me!
